By every visible measure, she was fine — working, parenting, functioning, capable. Nobody asked, because there was nothing to see.

When it ended, she went looking for an explanation and found an industry that was very good at telling her what was wrong with her and useless at telling her what to do about it. Diagnosis after diagnosis. No direction. And underneath all of it, the quiet assumption that there was a previous version of her waiting to be restored.

There wasn’t. There never is.

“I moved through each task with the kind of efficiency that looks like competence and feels like disappearing.”
— Chapter Four

Spiraling Into Control is what she found instead: that survival responses can look remarkably like competence. That numbness passes for control, and shutdown passes for maturity, for years before anyone notices. The dishes are done, or they aren’t, it doesn’t matter. You finally have what you’ve been begging the universe for since 6am — quiet, no one needing anything, no one asking what’s for dinner. And you walk out to the porch, or the bathroom, or under the covers in your own bed. Then you just sit there. And you don’t feel anything.

Not bad. Not good. Just nothing. Like someone turned the volume down on the whole thing.

If you’ve been there, you already know what I’m talking about. You don’t need me to draw the picture. You already feel it in your chest reading this, the recognition pulling up before the analysis can.

I lived in that exact moment for the better part of a year on the backend of my life utterly burning down around me (of my own making, but that’s a different post entirely).

The back porch in 2020. The kids on Zoom in the next room. A work call starting in seven minutes. Someone yelling about a math worksheet I genuinely could not understand. (Why has math changed so much? I still don’t know.) And me, somewhere outside my own life, watching myself make breakfast and answer emails and sign permission slips and respond to texts that said you’re amazing, I don’t know how you do it with a thumbs-up emoji. Because the thumbs-up emoji is the universal symbol for I am lying, but politely.

People around me thought I was holding it together. Honestly, I thought I was holding it together. I had a job. I had kids who were fed. I had a house that was mostly clean. By every external metric you’d hand to a woman, I was doing it.

What I actually was though, gone.

But not in a way anyone could see. I wasn’t crying. I wasn’t yelling. I wasn’t falling apart in the way the movies tell you a woman falls apart. I was just… absent from my own life. Functioning, but hollow. Performing, but empty. There was no one home inside the woman doing the doing.

And honestly, the scariest part wasn’t the numbness itself. It was that I’d started to think it was me. Like I’d just become a calmer person. Lower-maintenance. Easygoing. Quite the turnaround from how intense I was in the months leading up to this.

It wasn’t. It was my body doing the only thing it could still do. Which was conserve power. Returning me to a status quo I’d lived in before. Stay small, don’t react, don’t be.

But see, numbness isn’t a personality trait. It isn’t your new baseline. It isn’t proof you’ve finally chilled out. Numbness is what your nervous system does when continuing to run at full capacity would cost more than the system can afford. Your body files the emotions away behind a door it can’t open right now. Because accessing them would kill the machine.

So you go flat. You go quiet. You go on autopilot. You become the woman who shows up for everyone and feels nothing about any of it. And then you stand at the kitchen counter at 10pm trying to remember what you ate for lunch and realize you didn’t.

That woman, the one on the porch, the one in the car, the one staring at the streams of water in the shower, guess what? She’s not broken. She is exactly what a human nervous system looks like when it has carried more than it had capacity for, for longer than it should have.

Because I can’t help myself, which you will soon learn, I want to name something out loud. Mostly because I know how the wellness industry talks about this and I want to be clear that I’m not doing that.

This isn’t going to be a piece that tells you the numbness is here to teach you something. Your shutdown is not a gift. It is not your body’s wisdom whispering ancient truths. It is your body in conservation mode, and conservation mode sucks to live in, and you don’t have to be grateful for it.

What I will tell you is that there’s language for what’s happening, and once you have the language, the math starts to change. You stop wondering what’s wrong with you. You start understanding what’s happening to you. And those two questions live in completely different rooms.

So here’s where I’m going to land this plane, because I’ve been on enough porches in the dark to know that you don’t need a sermon at the end. You need to know what this is.

This Substack is the place where I name the terrain. The numbness, the shutdown, the who am I underneath all this, the part where you keep ending up back in the same internal weather and blaming yourself for it. I’m going to give you the language I didn’t have. The framework I built because nothing existing was honest enough to use. The map I needed and couldn’t find.

I’m not going to make your pain pretty. I’m not going to ask you to thank it. I’m not going to promise you a finish line, because I don’t believe in one, and anyone selling you one is selling you something.

What I will tell you is this. Your body’s been keeping records the whole time. The version of you that put on the costume to survive whatever you survived, she’s still in there. She didn’t go anywhere. She’s been waiting for someone to use her real name.

That’s what we’re doing here.

And one more thing, before we go. The work I do here, the framework, the language, the actual map, that part is always going to be free. I’m not interested in gatekeeping the thing that names you. Anybody who needs this should be able to find it without a credit card. A little self-deprecating shrug, like she’s apologizing for taking up the airtime. She’ll list off, almost defensively, the things that didn’t happen. She wasn’t hit. She wasn’t assaulted. Nobody died young. Her parents stayed together. Her childhood, if you saw it from the outside, was fine.

So why is her body acting like a war zone? Why can’t she sleep? Why is she crying in her car at 2pm on a Tuesday for no reason she can name?

She has all the symptoms of a woman whose nervous system has been pushed past what it could carry. But she does not have what she thinks should be the resume for those symptoms.

So she dismisses herself.

I did this for the better part of a decade. I would sit in a therapist’s office, list out what was going on in my body, the hypervigilance, the numbness, the inability to sleep without a TV running so my own thoughts couldn’t catch up to me, and then I would immediately follow it up with but I mean it’s not that bad. As if my symptoms were embarrassed of themselves and wanted to apologize for taking up space.

I had all kinds of names for what I was living through. I’m just a worrier. I run hot. I’ve always been intense. I’m an empath. I have a high-strung personality. I genuinely believed the diagnosis was my temperament. Like I’d just been born wired wrong and the rest of my life was going to be figuring out how to manage the wiring. The word trauma never came up.

They have a name for this category, by the way. Little-t trauma. As if it’s baby trauma. Trauma Lite. As if a nervous system only breaks when something explodes.

This is a move the whole wellness and mental-health industrial complex has gotten away with for over thirty years and almost nobody calls it out.

The category itself is the gaslight.

The phrase little-t trauma tells the woman who lived through years of chronic emotional volatility that what she survived was, technically, a smaller thing. The phrase implies that her nervous system’s response should be smaller too. The phrase implies that if her response is not smaller, then her response is the real problem. She is the problem.

Honestly? I’m not sure there is anything that makes me madder than this.

Because, check this out, the body, scientifically, biologically, physically, doesn’t know the difference between a single cataclysmic event and a thousand small ones that taught it to stay braced for years.

There’s an image in the book I keep coming back to because it’s the cleanest version of this I have. Imagine cutting a piece of paper. If you slice it cleanly in half, the damage is obvious. There’s a moment. A visible before and after. Anyone can point to it and say yes, that was the cut.

Now imagine taking the same piece of paper and trimming it. A tiny centimeter at a time. Carefully. Consistently. Over years. Each cut seems small. Reasonable. Almost nothing. You adjust. You adapt. The paper still mostly looks like paper.

Eventually you’re left holding a fragment that technically still exists but no longer resembles what you started with. The damage didn’t arrive all at once. It arrived through continuity.

Erosion is not gentler than collapse. Erosion is just quieter.

Now see, I’m a huge nerd and love the science behind all of this, so you’ll have to bear with me now and again when I take a moment to geek out. So, the fancy science people have a name for what the body does under chronic low-grade stress. Allostatic load. The ongoing wear and tear from a system that never gets to reset. Studies out of Rockefeller showed that chronic stress causes more long-term physiological damage than acute events. The body keeps adapting, keeps compensating, keeps running on fumes, and one day the debt comes due. The collapse looks like it came out of nowhere, but it didn’t.

So when a woman tells me it wasn’t that bad or it’s cousin but nothing big happened, what I hear is: nobody ever taught me that the thousand small cuts also count.

Because guess what? Our body doesn’t care what the DSM thinks. It doesn’t care what your family thinks. It doesn’t care what the wellness influencer with the ring light thinks. It doesn’t care what Aunt Sally at Thanksgiving thinks when she tells you to count your blessings because other people have it worse. (And yes, other people do. But that’s not the metric. That’s never been the metric.)

Your nervous system has never once, in the history of nervous systems, polled the room before responding.

Your body responds to what it actually experiences. It responds to the thing that happened. Whatever it was. Whatever it kept being.

If it exceeded your capacity to process it, and it changed how you live, your body has already filed the verdict. There’s nothing left to argue about. There’s no external authority that gets to overrule the system that did the actual surviving. There’s no committee that meets after the fact to decide if your symptoms were appropriately scaled.

It counts.

The body counted it. That’s the whole story. That is the only mechanism that has ever mattered.

I want to say one more thing, because I know how my industry (and I use both my and industry lightly) talks.

This isn’t a piece or a place that’s going to tell you to be grateful for what your suffering taught you. Your suffering didn’t teach you anything you needed to know. You would have been fine without learning it, and frankly you probably would have been a better-rested human. Anyone who tells you your pain was your portal is selling you a way to feel grateful for what hurt you, which is not the same thing as being free of it.

What I will tell you is that once you know that your nervous system is the qualifier, full stop, a lot of other things begin to stop. The dismissing stops. The am I being dramatic loop stops. You stop using other people’s traumas as the ruler for your own. You stop running yourself through the wellness-industrial-complex’s audit every time you have a bad day.

You start treating your own body as the source of truth instead of as an unreliable narrator.

That is the entire shift. It sounds simple. It is not.

We’re going to keep circling the question of what counts and what doesn’t, because you have likely spent your life being told that your body was wrong about its own experience.

You’re not crazy. You’re not overreacting. You’re not the rare exception who feels too much.

You are exactly what a human nervous system looks like when it has counted what happened to it.

The Four States

Ashes, Ember, Flame, Rise. The same is true when you start having language for what you’ve been experiencing.

You start seeing it everywhere. In the woman next to you at the school pickup line. In the conversation at dinner where someone laughs a little too hard at a story about her dog being more emotionally available than her ex. In yourself, in a hundred small ways you previously categorized as just how you are.

The language doesn’t change what’s happening. It just makes what’s happening visible.

That’s what we are going to do here. There are four states your nervous system moves through when it has been carrying more than it could carry for longer than it should have. I gave them names because they didn’t have any.

This is going to be the longest piece in this series, so hang with me. But I promise, I’m not going to clinical it up on you. I’m going to walk you through how I landed in each one of these and let you tell me whether you recognize your own porch.

Cool? Cool. Let’s go.

Ashes

I spent ten years in the Ashes without realizing that was where I was.

Not metaphorically. Ten actual years. There were periods inside those ten years where things were more or less intense, but the baseline was a kind of grey numbness that I had decided was just me. I’m just lower-energy. I’m just a homebody. I’m just not a very emotional person. I had so much language for what I was experiencing, and none of it was accurate.

The Ashes is the state in which the nervous system realizes that daily function costs more than it has. So it cuts the power. Emotions get filed away in a drawer the body can’t open. You can still function. You can still hold the job and feed the kids and answer the work emails. You just do it from a few steps to the left of your actual body, watching the performance play out.

The reason Ashes is so hard to recognize while you’re in it is that nothing is technically wrong. There’s no crisis. There’s no breakdown anyone can point to. You’re not in the ER. You’re not in bed. You’re upright. You’re functional. You look fine in the photos.

Ashes is quiet. It’s efficient. It’s convincing. The system has done such a thorough job of conserving power that even you think the flat is who you are. That’s why people stay in it for a decade. There’s nothing to leave from. Nothing is wrong enough to require leaving.

Ember

A nervous system doesn’t move from numb to alive in a single moment. It happens in tiny little flashes. The first time I noticed one, I was drinking a Pumpkin Chai Latte at Starbucks in October. (Yes, I am basic. Let’s move on.)

I was doing an assignment for a church class where I needed to list the people I’d wronged. My dad’s name came up. He’d died six months earlier from cancer that took him before I could say what I needed to say before I even knew I needed to say anything. Then my mom’s name came up, and with it a memory of a hospital recovery room and an accusation and a couch and a flight home that I had been carrying for years in some compressed file the body finally cracked open (the whole devastating story is in Spiraling Into Control). I sat in that place for maybe thirty seconds and felt something I would later understand to be I am not okay. And then I shook it off, closed my laptop, picked up the kids from school, went to church, made dinner, and did not think about it again for two months.

That is what an Ember is.

A brief flash of recognition that something isn’t right. Lasting seconds. Not enough capacity to stay with it. The system opens a window, you see something through it, and the window closes before you can name what you saw.

The trick with Embers is that they feel obnoxious and inconvenient. The body has been doing such a good job of not noticing for so long that when noticing starts to leak through, the first impulse is to seal the leak. Get back to functional. Pick up the kids. Make the dinner. Pretend you didn’t just feel something.

Two months after the Starbucks moment, I was standing in my living room with a tangle of Christmas lights in my hands, watching my husband at the time snap at our toddler with an anger that made her freeze and our son go still. And I had another Ember. When did this become normal? When did I become the one who manages the emotional temperature in the house? Same shape. Brief flash. Few seconds of clarity.

This time I didn’t dismiss it.

That’s what an Ember is too. Not the first time you notice. The first time you let yourself stay with what you noticed. Which is a different thing entirely.

Flame

Here’s where it gets uncomfortable, and I want to be honest about that. There is like nothing fun about the flame. Sorry.

Once you’ve had enough Embers that you can no longer pretend you didn’t see what you saw, the system shifts, just a little at first. It stops conserving. It starts refusing. Things that used to be tolerable become intolerable. The marriage you’d been performing for years stops accepting the performance. The friend group that requires you to shrink stops being a friend group you can stand to sit with anymore.

The Flame doesn’t show up as confidence. It doesn’t show up as finding your voice the way Instagram coaches like to package it. It shows up as I literally cannot keep doing this and I don’t yet know what comes after.

I literally cannot keep doing this and I don’t yet know what comes after.

For me, the Flame showed up when I realized that I had spent years putting on an eighteenth-century gown in August heat to attend battle reenactments because my then-husband loved them. Girl. I have churned butter. Voluntarily. Or so I told myself. I have stood in full costume in a field pretending to be a colonial-era housewife while my body screamed at me that I would rather be literally anywhere else doing literally anything else.

I am not, as it turns out, a person who likes hiking, camping, cosplay, or musket demonstrations. I am a person who loves being at home and values quiet and craves peace. So once my system had enough capacity to start saying no to the things it had been saying yes to for a decade, it could not be talked back into saying yes.

That is the Flame. The body refusing to keep performing what was killing it. The terrifying part is that the refusal arrives before you know what to replace the performance with. So you’re standing there in your life with the costume off in your emotional birthday suit.

The Flame is not comfortable. It’s not supposed to be. It’s the system burning off what doesn’t fit anymore. The clarity isn’t soft. The clarity is sharp. Sometimes the clarity costs you the relationship, the job, the friend group, the version of yourself everyone else liked.

If you are currently in the Flame, you already know. Nobody has to explain it to you. You’re just looking for someone to tell you it has a name and you’re not losing your mind.

It has a name. You’re not losing your mind.

Rise

The Rise is the one I have to write carefully, because every wellness writer in America wants to turn Rise into and then she was healed. That is not what Rise is. Rise is not the finish line. Rise is not the moment you graduate from your nervous system and become a person who never struggles again.

Rise is stance. The ability to hold loss and clarity at the same time. To have a relationship with your own internal weather that isn’t run by panic or shame. For your own voice to come out before the I’m fine machine starts up.

It’s often totally invisible. From the outside, the woman in Rise might look like she’s doing the same things she was doing in Ashes — going to work, feeding the kids, answering emails. But she’s doing them from inside her body. She’s not watching herself do them from somewhere outside. She knows what she wants for lunch and she eats it. She notices when she’s annoyed and decides what to do about it. She disagrees with people without disappearing. She lets her own kid be mad at her without immediately collapsing into guilt.

The Rise honestly feels kind of boring and like a total let down after the emotional wreckage of the Flame. Once the system isn’t running constant background calculations on whether everyone in the room is okay, an enormous amount of bandwidth comes back. You stop being tired in your bones. You stop performing presence and start being present. The exhaustion that you thought was just life turns out to have been the cost of the performance. You do what needs to be done and still have the capacity for more.

The Rise is not where you stay though. The Rise is a state you can access, lose, access again, lose again, access again.

You don’t graduate

This is the part that broke open the whole thing for me when I hit my second massive identity collapse and found myself back in the Ashes.

The four states are not a staircase. You don’t climb Ashes to Ember to Flame to Rise and then you’re done. There is no done.

The four states are not a staircase.

These are places your nervous system moves through — and it will keep moving through them, in different orders, with different triggers, for the rest of your life. You can be in Rise for two years and then a parent gets sick or a marriage ends or you have a baby or you lose a friend, and you find yourself back in Ashes. Familiar Ashes. Recognizable Ashes. The same flat-grey quiet you spent ten years in before.

This is where I so often see people just utterly destroyed. I did all that work. I’m right back where I started. The work didn’t take. I am fundamentally broken in a way that cannot be fixed.

That’s not what’s happening.

What’s happening is the Spiral. Which I’m going to write about next, because it deserves its own room to breathe.

For now, just know this. The four states exist. You have moved through all of them, multiple times, probably without language for any of it. The point of naming them is so that the next time you find yourself in the flat, or in the inconvenient clarity, or in the burning, or in the quiet stance — you know where you are. You stop blaming yourself for being there. You stop running the diagnostic loop. You stop trying to skip the part you’re in to get to the part you think you should be in.

You start treating your own internal weather as something you’re navigating instead of something you’re failing at.

That’s the entire shift.

The map makes the terrain legible.

That is so much more than nothing.

The Spiral

You’re not back at the beginning. The flat. The grey. The familiar internal weather you spent years fighting your way out of. And your first thought, before you can stop it, is:

Dammit. I’m here again. I haven’t actually gotten better. None of it took. I am right back where I started.

Hear me when I say this. You are not the only one. This is one of the most common, most painful, most universally devastating moments in the entire process of having a nervous system. And honestly, it’s because every framework you have ever been handed told you the goal was to leave the hard places in the past. So when you find yourself in one of them again, you read the return as failure.

But I am here to tell you, the return is the whole point.

Every traditional model of working through hard things is built on the same assumption: do the work, arrive somewhere stable, stay there. Heal as a finish line. Recover as a destination. Whatever the program is, the implied promise is that one day you will be transformed. The work will be behind you. The hard place will be a thing you used to go to, never to be seen or addressed again.

I bought this for years. I genuinely believed what I was doing in my late twenties and early thirties would lead to a version of me who didn’t have hard days anymore. I found someone I looked up to and aspired to be like. If I could only replicate her, but in my own body, I would be all set. I would do a round of therapy, feel better, lose some weight, get a promotion, and decide yes, this is it, I have arrived at the enlightened version of myself.

Then life would knock me sideways for seemingly no reason at all. And that new persona I was trying so hard to wear would disintegrate under the pressure. I would find myself back in the Ashes, looking around in horror at how familiar everything looked, and the only conclusion my brain could reach was I have failed at being better. I have undone all the work. I am back where I started and now I have to start over.

Spoiler. I had not failed. I had not undone the work. I was not back where I started.

I was in the Spiral, I didn’t know what the Spiral was yet.

When I finally started to draw it out on paper it became You will be in the Ashes again. You will have Embers again. You will burn in the Flame again. You will reach Rise again, lose it, and come back to it. This is the design.

Not a circle. A spiral. Cycling through the same four states again and again, but never in exactly the same place twice. Each time you make it through a cycle, you’re at a different altitude with different access and vision.

What changes is where you are when you visit.

The first time I was in the Ashes, I had no idea what was happening. I thought my flatness was a personality. I thought I was just a low-energy person who needed to get her act together. I tried to push through with sheer willpower, which is exactly what makes the Ashes deeper. I had no map. No language. No way to even understand what I was experiencing was a state rather than as just who I was.

The second time I was in the Ashes, after the marriage ended, I had a little more language. I knew, vaguely, that what I was going through was a response to something. I still fought it. I still shamed myself for being there. But I had a flicker of this is happening to me, not this is me.

The third time I was in the Ashes, I knew exactly where I was. I recognized the flat. I recognized the conservation. I recognized the quiet drawer my body had filed everything into. And instead of fighting it, I said okay. I’m here. This is what my system needs right now. It will pass.

And it did pass. Faster than before.

That is the difference altitude makes.

The returns aren’t the problem. They are the pathway.

So let me save you years of irritation.

The first time you’re in the Ashes, you have no idea where you are. You think you’ve become a flatter person.

The second time you’re in the Ashes, you might still resist it, but somewhere in you there’s a small wait, I’ve been here before.

The third time, the recognition arrives faster. Oh. This. The flat. The conservation. I know this place.

The fourth time, you might catch it within days. I’m in the Ashes. My system is conserving. This will pass.

The terrain is more and more familiar every time.

That’s the mastery. Getting better at recognizing the state you’re in, fast enough that you stop piling on shame to exhaustion.

The return is the whole point. It’s not about what you do between the returns. It’s about what you do during them, every time, no matter what put you there.

Ok, so the next time you find yourself back in the Ashes, here is what I want you to do.

I want you to notice that you have been here before.

I want you to notice that the noticing is itself proof that you are at a different altitude than the last time. The previous version of you didn’t have the words. This version does.

So then stop, just for a second, and refuse to add shame to what is already a difficult experience. Your system does not need judgment on top of exhaustion. The judgment is the layer that turns a passable hard week into a months-long collapse.

Say to yourself, or out loud if you feel like it, my dog Willow has heard this way more than once, I am in the Ashes. This is familiar. I have been here before. I will be here again. This is not a failure. This is my system processing something. It will pass.

And then do whatever the phase requires. Rest if it’s Ashes. Stay with the flash if it’s an Ember. Refuse the performance if it’s the Flame. Take the next plain step if it’s Rise.

That’s it. Not transcendence. Not breakthrough. Not arrival. Just the ongoing recognition of where you are in the cycle, and the willingness to be there without making it worse.

I am not going to tell you the returns get easy. They don’t necessarily. The grief in the second Ashes is still grief. The flat in the third Ember is still flat. The clarity of the next Flame still costs you something. The terrain is real. The pain in it is real.

What changes is what you do with the pain. What changes is that you stop trying to graduate from your own nervous system and start working with it instead of against it.
